Sunday 11th Mrahc 2012
Chemnitzer 2 Werder Bremen II 0
German Liga 3
Admission 20 euros to sit
Attendance 4,800 (away 23)
Programme - 1.50 euros 32 pages A4 full colour. Also a supporters programme 4 page b/w photocopy free of charge
Eventually I found the Number 51 bus stop on the very grim Street of Nations (it does improve as you go towards the city Centre) which stops directly outside the Stadion an der Gellertstrabe. Arriving 2 hours before kick off was a mistake as the area around the stadium is a bit of a dump. There are couple of bars nearby but the main supporters one is in a drafty disused warehouse. Very much an "Ultras"/"Men in Black" venue there is quite a lot of away day memorabilia on the walls. Beer is 1 euro a bottle so no complaints there and there are picnic tables and old sofas for your comfort. The supporters also issue their own free 4 page match programme which is available free of charge here.
It's quite interesting that there is still a lot of reference to the club old name of Karl Marx Stadt. You can also buy a Karl Marx Stadt scarf from the club shop and quite a few people wear them.
I suppose this ground has changed little in the last 20 years. It looks like some small fairly new portacabin type buildings are used for toilets and refershment stands. There is a "small hatch" window type club shop near the main stand. Hard to find unless you are specifically looking for it. A seating extension has been added to the main stand with a metal seating frame added over terracing.
Programmes are available from the ticket booths or club shop.
Outside the ground it looks like some preparation work has taken place for the planned development of the stadium. Some trees have been cut down behind the terracing and a house has been demolished ouside the ground to create more car parking and stadium frontage. The club website has details of the planned development but I'm not sure how fast it will progress or whether it has been approved by the local politicians.
A very much an old style DDR ground and a plus point is that it does not have a running track. It's a shame that it is going to change but it does lack a lot of the basics especially cover on three sides of the ground.
